Speeding on Knowles Hill

As part of its ongoing campaign to reduce speeding around the village the Parish Council, in conjunction with the Civic Trust, installed a speed indicator device on Knowles Hill. The results of the first 2 months, whilst not altogether surprising, are nevertheless deeply disturbing.

The following statistics have been taken from the first two months worth of data.

Total cars by date
Month No of cars
Aug 24398
Sep 24427
Oct 1263
Grand Total 50088

A total of just over 50,000 cars have passed the device since it was installed, averaging around 900 per day. This shows just how busy the road is before the addition of significant new housing on Rolleston Road. The speed at the top of Knowles Hill, approaching the village, is shown in the table below:

Speed No of cars Speed No of cars
Below 20 1351 46-50 90
21-25 6742 51-55 21
26-30 24697 56-60 8
31-35 14049 61-65 3
36-40 2682 86-90 1
41-45 444

Sadly this shows that around 30% of cars were breaking the speed limit. Many of these would face points on their licenses and even disqualification in some cases, especially the one travelling at 88mph, quite unbelievable. Even worse is the fact that despite seeing their speed displayed, many don’t attempt to slow down and with the impact of the downhill actually speed up as they pass the device, as shown below:

Speed No of Cars Speed No of Cars
Below 20 2385 46-50 229
21-25 3384 51-55 54
26-30 20760 56-60 27
31-35 16602 61-65 15
36-40 5360 66-70 2
41-45 1269 86-90 1

All of this data has been passed to the appropriate authorities who are taking this into account in forthcoming traffic calming measures which will shortly be proposed to the village. We will continue to monitor this and keep the authorities updated as we look to make our village a safer place to live.
